Once or twice a week I come across a frustrating post that is along the lines of “I’m trying to explain Twitter to someone.” I don’t understand why it is so difficult! I’m going to offer a simple analogy that I think almost everyone can understand (I assume that if you’re considering using Twitter, you are probably familiar with AIM). Twitter is like a better...

It's Not About Reducing the Noise
Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch writes that web 3.0 will be about reducing the noise. I doubt it. I’m at the tail end of the generation that has never known a world without the internet. It became a big deal in our lives when we were about 9 or 10 years old. Before I dive into this, I’ll tell you my one disclaimer: I don’t have an email overload problem. I have...

The Boston Marathon Bet
In early December a friend and I had a small disagreement about whether or not he could run the Boston Marathon. It quickly went from a small disagreement to a very large one. In the few years that I have known this person, he has done very little cardiovascular activity. The terms: Finish in 6 hours or less (this is MORE than reasonable for anyone our age who reasonably trains) He can’t...

The Quality of the Twitter Community
Initially I was a bit hesitant to subscribe to @lotd on Twitter. I thought that people would game the system. If someone wanted to, they could send a link to @lotd instead of a lyric and instantly have an audience of 200+ people. That hasn’t happened once. That says a lot about the quality of the community. I’m impressed.
Lyric of the Day (@lotd) Feature Request
This is more like a Twitter feature request because I don’t think that it is architecturally possible. I’d like to see some form of Adaptive Blue Smartlinks integration. I want to be able to learn more about some of the artists I see, or go directly to last.fm, amazon, or itunes to buy the song. This could potentially be a business model for twitter. Why not go a step further and...

The Future of Ad Networks
I want to start talking about a concept that is on the bleeding edge (it has recently just started to circulate): user centric ad networks. There are a few companies who are getting close, NebuAd is one of them. NebuAd and similar companies pull targeting data from ISP’s. I plan to describe several different network architectures— but I’m only going to do one per post....

Ranges, Ranges, Ranges
If you don’t like math (game theory I should say), stop reading. If you’ve been paying attention, you already know that I’m a backgammon nerd. I play as often as I can and store massive spreadsheets worth of data. I minitab the hell out of it. The hours I spend on analysis have made me a much better player. I play backgammon because I love strategy games. Another game that I...
Big Ideas
There’s one idea that I’ve been thinking about for over year: tracking the flow of content across the internet. For people familiar with tumblr, this will feel very similar to the reblog button. It is only recently that I have figured out the best way to attack this problem. It’s not perfect, and actually faces some serious risks. I’ll talk more about this later.
