The Human Problem cont’d
Social media companies need a Twilio for security issues. The basic tools to combat spam need to be provided via API which can be integrated into various systems.
The most interesting component of this type of an architecture is the potential data asset. StockTwits does not directly compete with AdaptiveBlue but both companies have user generated content about stocks. I don’t know anything about their potential security issues but my experience has been anywhere there is a stock message board there is spam. I am sure we see different links, fake users, etc. Sharing that data instantly increases the effectiveness of both systems.
Containing security issues has become a competitive advantage for many companies. I don’t think StockTwits would be willing to share it’s knowledge with competitors. But maybe we could license our data for a fee.
A lot of the spam on StockTwits is not stock related— it’s generic. I bet that is the case with other companies. I’m just thinking out loud here but maybe it is time that companies start to open up this data and fight together (the existing lists aren’t enough, IMO— and companies are still left to commit resources to this problem). Spammers will always come up with new tricks— but to start they would be up against a serious amount of data. We need a company to try and stay a step ahead of the game. It’s what’s best for users in the long run.
