$TWENTYTEN - The Year of the Reality Shift

$Twentyten will be the year of the reality shift. Shifting realities, or the promise of, is a fundamental component of entertainment. A game show where contestants can win up to $1,000,000/episode is the perfect example. People love the idea of a dramatic change in financial position overnight.  No one wants to watch a TV show where someone works for 40 years, saves, and eventually retires with a million dollars. Slow, evolutionary change is boring, but things that can instantly shift reality are interesting.

In the physical world, night clubs that sell bottle service rely on this theory. Pretty girls, expensive drinks, and a luxurious surrounding can do wonders for your self confidence. You might even find it easier to get that girl to smile at you.

On the web, the broadest example is youtube. People produce videos hoping one will go viral making them a celebrity overnight. Gilt Groupe, Groupon, ScoopStreet, etc, enable one to purchase that luxury item at a significant discount.

I think we will see more businesses built around this theory. After a tough economic year, people are in need of a reality shift more than ever.
