why is it so hard to explain twitter? aka “how to explain twitter to your kids”
Once or twice a week I come across a frustrating post that is along the lines of “I’m trying to explain Twitter to someone.” I don’t understand why it is so difficult!
I’m going to offer a simple analogy that I think almost everyone can understand (I assume that if you’re considering using Twitter, you are probably familiar with AIM).
Twitter is like a better away message. You have a bunch of “buddies” that follow you, and you can update them about what you are doing throughout the day. It’s better because you don’t have to be at your computer to send an update— you can do it in real time in case your plans change. I mean, come on, let’s be realistic, I know you weren’t at a movie for the past 3 days! Of course, not everyone uses an away message in that manner. If you skim your buddy list, you’ll see questions, quotes, lyrics, etc. That happens on Twitter too! Breaking up with someone? No problem, Twitter has you covered. You can use the @username command to send a public message directed at your no longer significant other— perfect for the “away-message fighters.” Not sure if you’re being avoided? If you direct message (the equivalent to an IM) or @ someone on Twitter and you don’t get a quick response— you probably are! No more waiting around for a few hours to see if that person is actually “away” or just not talking to you.
As you can see, its apparent that Twitter has superior advantages to AIM. Maybe one day it will replace it.
