The Golf Bet

Tomorrow is the big day! I am going to play 3 rounds— 54 holes, with only a 7 iron and a putter. However, I have to carry my bag. I need to break 93 on each round, and have 15 hours to complete the task.

The other day, I was explaining to my friend how I only use a few clubs in my bag. In high school I put this to the test and played with three clubs— a putter, four iron, and seven iron. I ended up shooting an 81.

That’s not half bad, and I thought I could do something similar with 1 club and a putter. My friend tried to play the luck card, and we immediately got into a disagreement.

We decided that breaking a certain score, three times would be reasonable indicative. Agreeing on the score— and club was another story. I wanted a four iron so I could be long off of the tee and play a bump and run game into the green. He wanted an unreasonably low score so I settled on a 7 iron and a 93.

I can hit my 7 iron approximately 165-170 yards. Because I’ll be playing from the tips, I won’t be able to hit most par 4’s in two (the course is over 7200 yards from the blue). If I reach in 3 and two putt, I’ll come in around 90. Allowing for a bit of fudge factor, assuming a few pars, and the fact that hitting out of a greenside bunker with a 7 is a nightmare, 93 seems reasonable.

Unfortunately, I have to carry my full bag. I’m not sure how I feel about this. It might make things tougher.
