Lost... Kind Of...

I’m an investor at heart. Ultimately, I want to be a VC.

As a finance major with a love of tech, I’m faced with a difficult decision. There’s no clear cut path to breaking into VC. Many firms recruit from startups/tech, others recruit from finance positions.

It’s a difficult spot to be in because I’m not sure when I’ll get there. It might be 2-3 years from now, it might be 10. What if it is 10 years away? A part of me says that I didn’t study finance for the past four years for nothing. The other part of me says to go for tech, and who knows, maybe I’ll even start another company in the future. I’m not sure. Both paths seem logical.

If I go the tech route and I don’t make it into vc within 2-3 years, what happens if I get the itch to get back into finance? I think it will be a tough sell and I’ll have no modeling experience. At that point I feel like my best option would be an MBA. However, if I go the finance route, I don’t think I’d go back for an MBA. I don’t feel the need to be credientialed (ok, thats a made up word, but I do that from time to times) out. I think the true value of an MBA is for someone who is interested in switching careers, which is something I won’t necessarily need.

I’m not really sure which way to go and all advice is welcome. I’m going to keep applying to jobs on both sides and pick the path that makes me happiest. How I’ll determine that… I’m not sure…
